This is very true. My partner works in IT and spends an awful lot of unpaid mental effort on aspects of his work.

The problem we’re dealing with in academia is that we’re not being paid for work we’re doing on the job. Work that’s very clearly work in that it occurs in a specific place, and involves a clearly defined output: marking essays, teaching, research, outreach. It has become the norm to underpay or not pay at all for this kind of work.

This is why we howl.
